Husband/wife duo The Gray Havens just released a new Christmas song they recorded using an iPhone.
“City of David,” birthed as a surprise to the duo while working on their new studio album. David Radford explains “We really hadn’t planned on recording a Christmas song this year but inspiration kicked in one night and I started recording on my iPhone. When we showed the song to our producer, Ben Shive, he voted to keep the iPhone vocals, declaring them to be cool, so we did!”
The Gray Havens rush released “City of David” to digital outlets including Apple Music and Spotify and created a “making of” video, which can be viewed HERE.
In addition to the new Christmas song, The Gray Havens recently released “High Enough,” the first single from their forthcoming album scheduled to release in Spring 2018. The Gray Havens can be seen live on some of Andrew Peterson’s Behold The Lamb Tour dates including the sold out show at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.

This week, the world celebrates Easter. Some celebrate with chocolate bunnies and little yellow marshmallow chickens. Some celebrate with a nice new outfit. Some celebrate with family around a table full of wonderful food. Many pick this one day out of the year to attend church. For me, it’s a time to celebrate the most important event in the history of the world. God’s son Jesus was crucified on a cross but then overcame death and rose from his tomb. An event that makes it possible for us to live eternity in heaven with God. There is more to this life on earth!
Below is a video trailer for the beautiful song My Savior Lives written by Noah Cleveland and Tony Wood. I describe the song as Hauntingly Glorious and it feels me with incredible emotion every time I hear it.

Mary Did You Know that Christmas is Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene’s favorite time of the year? December is a BIG royalty check generating month for the two songwriter’s of “Mary, Did You Know” as the song continues to build in worldwide popularity. This year Pentatonix is singing the song to the top of the charts. Over the years, the song has been recorded by Wynonna Judd & Kenny Rogers, Rascal Flats, Cee Lo Green, Scotty McCreery, Mary J Blige, India Arie, Reba McEntire, Clay Aiken, Jeremy Camp, Kutless and The Braxtons just to name a few.
This week I ran across a Youtube performance that puts a totally new spin on “Mary, Did You Know.” Below is a video with Ryan Corn giving the song a hipster busking vibe. Merry Christmas!

When Is Mother’s Day 2014? A date that artists and music marketing professionals should have on their calendars. Why? Mother’s Day is a huge opportunity for selling music to those looking for gifts. Most record companies target holidays but many independent artists don’t think about the holiday marketing opportunities outside of Christmas. Music is now one of the easiest and cheaper gifts that consumers can give. Gifting digital music from iTunes can be now be done with the click of a button and in a matter of seconds to a friend or loved one 1000 miles away. My post a few years back Introducing The iTunes Green Card explains how gifting a song is cheaper than sending a card. Why not exploit that and remind your followers and fans?
Planning releases around holidays is also a wise idea as it allows you to take advantage of heavier consumer traffic. Most artists remember that Christmas is a great time for music gifting but they tend to forget the other holiday opportunities throughout the year. Easter is the 2nd biggest holiday for selling Christian music with Mother’s Day close behind.
Valentine’s Day is this week. Anyone taking advantage of that?

Worship leader and friend of mine, Carl Cartee, has released a new Christmas EP Do You Believe and is giving proceeds to help Amazima, a non-profit organization, feed families in Uganda. Every full download purchased feeds 29 people!
Cartee states “After reading Bob Goff’s book Love Does, I really felt like I had to try something to love people more tangibly. I was confronted with some pretty gaping holes in the way I took action to love people! I decided to do what I knew, sell some music and give the money away. I’ve partnered with Amazima, the ministry of New York Times Bestselling author Katie Davis (Kisses From Katie). Her work with orphans and the poor of Uganda is helping to change generations for the glory of God. My goal is to give them $50,000 for Christmas this year.”
Do You Believe contains 4 Christmas classics along with the original title track, Do you Believe. You can check out the record at https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/do-you-believe-ep/id747157185
