Debunking “Core Artists”

I hear the term “Core Artists” thrown around quite often in the Christian music industry. I have actually caught myself using the term at times. The label feels a bit exclusionary for an industry designed to spread an inclusionary message. What gives an artist such status? Fame, Fortune, Popularity, the amount of money they generate for the industry?

While there certainly is a need for keeping the quality of music and art at a high level, many artists who meet or exceed that level are excluded in lieu of “Core Artists” I would encourage every decision maker in the Christian music industry to stop and think when tempted to give preferential treatment to those who are considered “Core Artists.” You may miss something incredible!

How do you feel about “Core Artists” getting preferential treatment?
