As a music marketing professional, artists & labels often ask me the question “How Do I Get My Music Featured On iTunes?” It’s no surprise that question is on the mind of artists and labels as iTunes is now the #1 account for selling music. While it’s very easy for any artist to make their music available in the iTunes music store through Tunecore or CD Baby, it’s more of a challenge to get the album or single pictured on the main music or music genre pages. The first thing one should know is that featured space can’t be bought. iTunes takes pride in the fact that their featured positioning is editorial. However, relationships do play a big a big role in what music gets on the iTunes radar screen for consideration. The major labels have no problem getting the coveted space as they have dedicated account reps who have standing weekly meetings with the iTunes team. There are some independent consultants, including myself, who have built relationships with the iTunes team and have the ability to get titles on their radar screen for consideration. At Artist Garden Entertainment, we work closely with independent labels and artists to create a marketing plan that will drive digital sales and get the interest of the iTunes team. While iTunes is editorial and the music is most important, they still want to see a marketing plan designed for success. We are very selective about what we agree to work to iTunes as we want to be known as the company that brings quality music along with effective marketing in place to drive sales!
