Marketing music looks much different than it did a few years back. Instead of focusing on consumers’ cd racks, the primary goal now is to get songs on the playlists of consumers’ various listening devices. Get one song on the consumer’s playlist and you stand a small chance at creating a fan which hopefully leads to selling them more music.
Playlists come in different shapes & sizes. iTunes & Pandora are clearly the big leaders but there are others that shouldn’t be overlooked. Marketers turn over every stone (or bit) in an effort to find the path that leads to the playlist, even if it requires giving the song away for free.
Have you become a fan of an artist that you discovered via a random song in your playlist?
